Swoony Boy Alert!! Adam Kent (Shatter Me)
Welcome Back!!! It’s time for another Swoony Boy Alert!!
We’ve had so much fun with these posts, and want to thank each and every one of you for the emails, comments and tweets about your favorite swoony boys. We love to hear what you have to say and adore talking to all of you about books, writing, life and of course, swoon.
For the newcomers: What are Swoony Boy alerts, you ask? SBA’s are random posts in which we, and you, YES YOU, awesome reader, gather around a cup of tea/coffee/latte/sparkly pink drink to talk about our favorite male characters in fiction. They can be old favorites *cough*Mr. Darcy*cough* or new boys we’re meeting for the first time. Coming soon, the SBA’s will be joined by the Basass Chick On Boards (BCoB), posts spotlighting the most kick-ass girls in the YAdom.
BUT BUT BUT you guys? The time has come for us to talk about ADAM! *the world faints*
In June, Lo told you all about the A-M-A-Z-I-N-G Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. And while compiling our list of Swoony Boys, we kept squealing over coming back to one boy in particular: Adam (zomgswoonsflailsfaintsTATTOOS!) Kent. And stg, if there’s one fictional boy worthy of the title Swoony Boy, it’s Adam Kent.
NOTE: Shatter Me hits stores in one month (!!Nov 15th!! HAVE YOU ORDERED YOUR COPY YET??), so we’re going to restrain our inner fangirl be super cautious about giving you as much swoon as possible, while spoiling as little as we can. All quotes have been taken from the ARC, so be sure to check against the final copy. AND WHAT WAS THAT? We’re giving away an ARC of Shatter Me? That’s right! Details at bottom.
But first, everyone on your fainting couch? Smelling salts ready? Let’s do this…
A little background from the summary: Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days. The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war- and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.
I’ve read this one twice, TWICE! And find myself repeatedly floating back to parts of the story while I’m supposed to be hard at work. Juliet’s been imprisoned. She doesn’t know why. She doesn’t know for how long. She swears she’s not crazy. And one day, after not speaking to another person for 264 days, her cell door opens and in walks Adam.
He clenches and unclenches his jaw. He runs a hand through his hair and I realize for the first time that he’s not wearing a shirt. It’s so dark in this room I can only catch the curves and contours of his silhouette; the moon is allowed only a small window to light this space but I watch as the muscles in his arms tighten with every movement and I’m suddenly on fire. Flames are licking at my skin and there’s a burst of heat clawing through my stomach. Every inch of his body is raw with power, every surface somehow luminous in the darkness. In seventeen years I’ve never seen anything like him.
Adam says nothing. He doesn’t look in my direction. His body is erect, six feet of gorgeous lean muscle, his profile strong and steady. The same arms that held my body are now holsters for lethal weapons.
Did I mention he’s hot as hell?? Yeah. But wait, because while he’s definitely beautiful, there’s so much more to him than that. He’s honest and loving and just basically a good guy. He’s the perfect combination of strong and gentle. He puts the “aw” in RAWR! [okay, Lo added that last one, you can blame her]. And Mafi builds his character in such a fun TEASING EVIL way. We think we know who he is, we see him befriend Juliette, we see this sweet and protective and kind side to him (omg wait until you see him with James), only to have everything turned upside down when… and then… BUT HE’S REALLY… [Lo steps in and tapes Christina’s mouth]
Some Adam swoon?
“I don’t understand — why won’t you talk to me? You sit in the corner all day and write in your book and look at everything but my face. You have so much to say to a piece of paper but I’m standing right here and you don’t even acknowledge me. Juliette please—” He reaches for my arm and I turn away. “Why won’t you at least look at me? I’m not going to hurt you—”
And *sobs*….
“Juliette,” he whispers, and I realize just how close he is. I’m not sure why I haven’t evaporated into nothingness. “It’s been me and you against the world forever,” he says. “It’s always been that way. It’s my fault I took so long to do something about it.”
I just can’t say enough. Beyond being a beautifully crafted story with phenomenal characters (we’re currently plotting our TEAM Adam tattoos as I type), the author is humble and adorable and truly an inspiration (check out her blog and follow her on twitter, trust us). Authors – take note. Mafi is a class act. Order your copy and come back and tell us all about it. Seriously. We’ll make cookies and paint each others nails (Christina) or arm wrestle (Lo) and swoon together.
BUT THERE’S MORE. One super duper awesome amazing Swoontini reader is going to win their very own copy. Like this week. REALLY. Leave us a comment and we’ll pick a winner at random. Before you know it, your very own ARC of SHATTER ME COULD BE IN YOUR HOT LITTLE HANDS.
